note from within and without
36. 6 i think ad 2
Distinction between movement originating from within and movement origination from without - from within tends more to what is congenial, than receding from the contrary. But from without is strained by that contrariety itself, because each thing in its own way is pressed to resist its contrary, as to preserve itself. (thus violent motion is intense at first, but relaxes towards the end. (Here it is not clear if the violent motion relaxes because the thing yields, or because the violent thing is repelled) But a motion from the appetitive part is from inside, since it is from the soul to things. HERE THE ACTIVITY OF THE SOUL IS SHOWN - not all passions are violent. And therefore, per se speaking, pleasures are desired more than sadness is shunned. But the motion of the sensitive part (oops) is from the outside, as though from things to the soul. Whence something is more sensed what is more contrary. And so per accidens, inasmuch as the senses are required for pleasure and sadness, sadness is more fled than delight is desired (THIS WILL SERVE, in conjunction with the “presence”, to explain “evil as a thing.”)
